Your Wedding: Giving Back

July 20th, 2010

Are you finding yourself stuck browsing magazines and the Internet to figure out what to give your guests as wedding favours?  If this is you, why not give something back instead?

Making a donation to a charitable organization is a timeless favour idea in an ever-changing society.  You’ll find that most (if not all) of your guests will support and admire your decision.  However, even if a selected few guests do not completely agree with your decision, remember that it is your day.  Your beliefs and values should motivate your decisions in all aspects of your wedding day.

Need help getting started?  Here are some well-known Canadian organizations:

While there may be several factors that determine which organization you donate to, remember to choose a cause close to your heart or one that reflects you and your partner’s beliefs.

Choosing a charitable organization with your partner will be a fulfilling shared experience and a special stepping stone towards building your life together as a married couple.

Other ways to give back on your wedding day:

  • Have your caterer donate leftover food to a local shelter
  • Donate your flowers to hospitals or nursing homes
  • Accept donations on behalf of your chosen charity in lieu of wedding gifts
  • Bridesmaids can even donate their dresses for use by underprivileged teens on prom night

Giving back on your wedding day is a highly personalized way to make your special day all the more special for you and your loved ones.

An Edgy Photo Finish

April 27th, 2010

Today’s brides are becoming more and more willing to venture beyond ages old wedding dress etiquette with the increasingly popular “trash the dress.”  However, this wonderfully exhilarating trend doesn’t have to mean what the name implies.

Before deciding whether or not this trend is for you imagine this…

On your wedding day, you will be the stunning and picturesque bride in the beautiful dress.  But, why not have a second session in the days following your wedding and give your photos an edgy finish?  Put on your dress again, use some bold accessories and enjoy a mini-adventure with your new husband… Dance in the rain, climb a tree, splash in a fountain or ride that Harley.  You could even grab some of your newly married girlfriends and paint the town in your dresses.  You don’t actually have to trash your dress but it probably will get a little dirty (not to worry – dress cleaners are able to work wonders)!

Trend: Mismatched Bridesmaids

April 6th, 2010

In recent years, mismatched bridesmaid dresses have increased in popularity.  Not only does this trend give your bridesmaids the opportunity to choose a style of dress that they love and will actually want to wear again, but also to choose a dress that falls within their budget.  (Just be sure to offer some guidelines to your bridesmaids in terms of colour and formality).

Let’s take this trend a step further to the bouquets…  As seen in 2008’s “Sex and the City” movie, the girls all wore mismatched bridesmaid dresses AND each carried their own unique bouquet.

Choosing to use mismatched bouquets on your wedding day is an eye-catching and very stylish way to recognize the individuality of each of your bridesmaids.  After all, each member of your bridal party is chosen based on their special place in your life…

For instance, is one of your girls a hopeless romantic?  Use roses in her bouquet.  Or, is one of your bridesmaid’s known for her eternal cheerfulness?  Pick gerbera daisies for her bouquet.

When selecting your flowers, you can choose different flowers within the same colour hue, or (like Carrie) do not follow a colour scheme at all.

The wonderful thing about this modern trend is that there are no rules in creating a fabulous wedding theme that suits your wedding!

Your Wedding: To Tape or Not to Tape?

April 1st, 2010

Your wedding is considered one of the most important days of your life, so why not preserve your memories by capturing them on film?  Today, as couples look to economize on their wedding expenses, the professional videographer is often one of the first vendors to go.  After all, there is always a well-meaning guest with a video camera willing to make an amateur recording of your day.  But, beware of hobbyists as I can assure you that you will not always be pleased with the outcome.  Let me explain.

One of the main reasons to hire a professional wedding videographer is the quality you can expect to receive.  Wedding videographers are experienced and use high-tech equipment to avoid end results such as blurriness or an unsteady hand.  Since these professionals are trained in lighting and often have two or more cameras rolling at a time, you can expect a clear picture.  You can also expect that no detail will be overlooked.  Sometimes when you ask a guest to film your wedding day, he or she may become distracted with dinner, other guests or even the bar and miss those important moments such as your first kiss or bouquet toss.

The wonders of professional video editing can also justify hiring a videographer for your special day.  Editing may include tricks such as coordinating images with a soundtrack, adding special effects or using slow motion during a precious moment.  This type of editing can truly transform a raw footage documentary into a magical wedding movie.

Aside from the technical aspects, your wedding video will let you relive your special day time and time again.  After the dress has come off and you have begun your journey of marriage, you can watch your video and experience being a bride (or groom) all over again.  Your video will capture everything you may have missed in the excitement of your day such as the tender ways you looked at one another or perhaps the way your dress moved during your first dance.  It’ll evoke memories such as the sweet taste of your cake and the feeling you had during your first kiss as newlyweds. You will also have the chance to share this experience with loved ones as you laugh and cry together.  Perhaps most incredible, is no matter how many years have passed you will be able to return to the beginning again; to witness the start of a love unfolding and a promise of forever.

People say that a picture is worth a thousand words and this is true.  But I promise you, the video will be a priceless treasure to cherish always… After one another of course!
